Mar. 8th, 2026 12:36 amSo, we've already started playing Kingdom Hearts 3 XD
We've devoured Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. I think it's one of my favourite, simply for Riku's character development and the bond between him and Sora (those boys, I love them so much, they're so gay for each other -- look, you can't put out a game with only interesting male characters and not expect people to ship them together). I really love how they allowed Riku not to stay the little angsty boy he's been in the first game and become soft and kind hearted while still strong. And I love how Sora stayed so optimistic through everything he's been through as well (although I think I've already seen some of the cracks in the first bit I've played in KH3 so far).
Another thing that I really liked in Dream Drop Distance is the use of pokemon-like spirits you create and level up through time. A lot of them were really cute, and it was fun to give them stupid names (DuDE, Neighdra, Stank Butt, Ddvvdju, Zelda, Lapinot, Mimi Bnuy). We could play with them and pet them, it was pretty useless as a mechanic for the game itself (especially when the tone shifted to something more dark), but I did enjoy it, it was a fun way to break the pace of the game. I also had a lot of fun returning to Traverse Town and discovering new districts there. Traverse Town is my wife's favourite world in the game. We also returned to Tron (the first time was okay, the second was following the movie with Olivia Wilde "born sexy yesterday", and it's always so strange seeing real people in 3d animation with 3d cartoons and anime characters. It was strange in Pirates of the Carribean world, it is strange in that one). This time I also got to explore The Hunchback of Notre Dame's world for the first time and that one was really fun! As I've mentioned before, Hunchback is my favourite Disney movie, so I enjoyed exploring Notre-Dame and the catacombs. (I haven't played further games in the Assassin's Creed series than the Ezio trilogy, but I'd love to play the one set in Paris just to climb Notre Dame and run through the streets of Paris).
The ending of the game really got me thinking that Sora will soon get real trauma for all he has endured. As I said, I'm already seeing some hints of that in KH3, and while it would break my heart to see it, it wouldn't be unwelcome for the narrative.
After we were done with Dream Drop Distance, we played the very short game Birth By Sleep: A Fragmentary Passage. Playing a solo game as Aqua was really interesting, and I didn't dislike the gameplay this time compared to Birth By Sleep. I also really appreciated the return of the triangle button to open treasures and interact with the world. For a while after the first game it was X to interact instead and it fucked me up cause I kept attacking/using magic by pressing triangle instead. Now, I have to relearn to press triangle because I still attack, but at the very least it's just a normal attack and not magic anymore.
The last game before KH3 was Union X, which was... interesting to say the least. Only the cut scenes were available for this one since it was an MMO, and it tried to explain what caused the keyblade wars... by way of explaining the origins of the keyblade masters themselves? It was... well, ya, interesting. What this tells me is that the keyblade wielders started as a cult? The first keyblade master certainly was manipulative as fuck, and what I got from the whole thing was that he disappeared, leaving his disciples contradictory messages so they would start the keyblade wars he prophetized. And then, time travel shenanigans, Ventus got sent from that time to where Birth By Sleep began?
I think what's most enjoyable about Kingdom Hearts is definitely the game play and the relations between the main characters as they evolve through the storyline. The storyline itself does have some interesting points but some of them I'm definitely willing to just... forget they've ever been mentioned XD. Unless they gain some more importance in KH3 and maybe later in KH4. That said, the ground certainly is fertile for fanfiction writing! I have a few ideas I want to get into at some point or another, just as writing exercises. I'll probably share them here eventually.
Now, I've got a whole other game to get through! So far so good, I enjoy playing it a lot, and Sora is still a sweetheart (an increasingly snarky one, but that comes with growing in your teen years XD and it's really funny XD). I'm looking forward to seeing where the game is going to go this time around! And after that... well, I will know the pain of waiting most fans have gone through before for KH4.

Date: 2026-03-08 08:30 am (UTC)That being said yeah, DDD has quite a few problems story wise but it is great that Riku was finally given a game to be the MVP. He's definitely the most developed character in the franchise and it's nice to see that the journey he started in Chain of Memories finally reach it's conclusion. And I do love Riku passing the test and Sora failing. DDD also has my favorite Sora moment in the franchise so ya know, it nails the hype moments and aura.
Seeing your reactions to KH3 will be fun, I assume you're gonna have a different perspective on it compared to people who actually had to wait the like 7 years for it to be released lmaoooo.

My friends are also waiting for my reaction since they all felt underwhelmed by KH3 upon release and since I'm coming in new AND not waiting, its going to be interesting how that changes it!

And that's cool that Hunchback is your favourite Disney movie! It's one of mine, too.
